How do I forward a message as an attachment ?


When you send attachments with your mails, you have to consider the following restrictions. 


When sending or receiving e-mail messages always take into account the following:

- Attachments in an e-mail message always have to be processed within the e-mail message itself. The encoding increases the size of the messages by one third. If an attachment is about 9 MB, the mail will take up about 12 MB.
- The mail servers will allow up to 12 MB. It is however not recommended to send messages that large. The message you are sending can for example not be larger than the free space available in your own mailbox. You have to take this into account in case the message can not be delivered and is sent back to you.
- For the 'Exchange' environment, the same limits apply.
- When sending an e-mail via webmail, the attachment can not be larger than 8 MB. This restriction only applies when sending e-mail (new message, forward, reply, ...), not when receiving an attachment.

It is recommended to keep e-mail attachements as small as possible (e.g. by compressing them to a zip file) or to make files available in an other way.

In order to know the true origins of an e-mail the full e-mailheader is required.

Full headers option in different e-mail clients

In order to troubleshoot e-mail delivery troubles or to report spam, you need the full headers.
That is why you have to forward the received email as an attachment. Thus the necessary info will be included
Headers contain tracking information for an individual e-mail, detailing the path a message took as it crossed mail servers.
Spam often has forged headers. Full headers allow us at DICT to trace an e-mail and block the sender. 


Webmail/SquirrelMail

Open the message as if you were planning to read it and then click on


  Options:   View Full Header


By default, forwarding of a received e-mail is done without the full header information of the received e-mail message included.

Full headers are not shown by default. Below you find a description of how you can consult the full headers of an e-mail message in different e-mail clients.
If you are using another e-mail client, please check the help function of that particular client for more information.

You can proceed in different ways.

1. Outlook 2007: attachments via drag-and-drop

  • Open Microsoft Outlook.
  • Create a New Mail Message
  • Leave the e-mail window open and look for the received spam e-mail
  • Do not open the spam e-mail, but drag it into the open e-mail window. The spam e-mail is attached to your e-mail.
  • Send you e-mail.

2. Thunderbird: attachments via drag-and-drop

  • Run you e-mail program
  • Create a New Mail Message
  • Leave the e-mail window open and look for the received spam e-mail
  • Do not open the spam e-mail, but drag it onto the Attachments icon (or into the subject field) in the Compose window. The spam e-mail is attached to your e-mail.
  • Send you e-mail.

3. Outlook 2007: insert a mail message as an attachment

  • Open Microsoft Outlook.
  • Click the "File" menu. Then, click "New". Finally, click "Mail Message".
  • A new message window will appear. Click on the "Insert" tab in this new window. Then, click the "Attach Item" button.
  • The "Insert Item" window will appear. Click on the folder that contains the message you are attempting to forward.
  • On the bottom of this window, a list of messages in the folder will appear. Click the message you are attempting to forward.
  • Click on the radio button labeled "Attachment". Then, click "OK".
  • In the new e-mail message window, you will see the desired message listed as an attachment.
  • Complete and send the e-mail message as usual.

4. Outlook 2007: send as an attachment

  • Select the e-mail message in your Inbox.
  • Click "Forward as attachment" in the Actions Menu.
  • A new e-mail message is opened.Enter the adressee and your comments.
  • Clik "Send".
  • The selected e-mail message is sent as an attachment.

5. Thunderbird: send as an attachment

  • Select the e-mail message in your Inbox.
  • Click "Forward" in the Message Menu.
  • Select "as attachment"
  • Click "Forward" "as attachment" in the Message Menu.
  • A new e-mail message is opened. Enter the adressee and your comments.
  • Clik "Send".
  • The selected e-mail message is sent as an attachment.

6. Outlook 2003: send as an attachment

  • Select the message that you want to forward.
  • If you want to forward two or more messages, select the first message, hold down CTRL, and then select each additional message. Multiple messages are forwarded as attachments in a new message.
  • Click "Forward".
  • Enter recipient names in the To, Cc, and Bcc boxes.
    (To select recipient names from an address list, click the To, Cc, or Bcc button.)
  • If you are forwarding multiple messages, type a subject in the Subject box of the message that includes the attached messages.
  • Click "Send".

7. Gmail web interface

  • Use the "Show original" item from the right-hand-side menu in message; this menu starts with "Reply"
  • Select All
  • Copy
  • Save as file.txt
  • Attach file.txt to your email


8. Apple Mail

Message Menu -> "Forward As Attachment"
